Introduction to Writing From Live Art
Writing From Live Art will provide an opportunity for new writers, or writers who are new to Live Art, to engage with Live Art and performance work and to move towards seeing their writing in print. Now in its second year, Writing From Live Art will build on the success of its first year and provide opportunities for up to three more writers to engage with, and write about, this compelling and vibrant sector.
Writing From Live Art, Round 2 will be a bespoke programme designed to address the specific needs of the writers who will be taken onto the scheme. The support provided could include some or all of the following, depending on individual need: writing retreats, one-to-one support, writing exercises, peer review and assistance in approaching publishing points. Participants will also receive a small go-and-see grant to enable them to see a range of work and will have an opportunity to submit work to Live Art UK’s forthcoming publication the Live Art Almanac.
Writing From Live Art will promote the understanding of Live Art practice by supporting a new generation of writers who are engaged with the sector and can write from both a critical perspective and one which is accessible to a wider audience. Live Art UK is looking for writers with energy and curiosity but also individuals that are prepared to properly commit to the programme and make the most of this opportunity.

Programme
Writing From Live Art will enable up to three new writers or writers who are new to Live Art to participate in the critical writing initiative from 1 June 2007 - 1 March 2008. The scheme will provide the following:
Context
Evolving from Performance Art, Live Art covers a range of performance, performative and time based practices that are undefined or unrestricted by artform boundaries. Live Art is not a singular artform, but a cultural strategy to include ways of working that might otherwise be excluded from a range of curatorial, cultural and critical frameworks.
Live Art offers a space in which artists can take formal and conceptual risks, try out different ways of working, consider ideas of process, explore aspects of their practice and investigate relationships with an audience.
As Joshua Sofaer has written “Live Art offers a haven to artists whose work does not comply with the strictures of traditional designations”
Writing From Live Art will support new writers and writers new to Live Art, through the process of engaging with work which is as fluid as it is specific and as political as it is ephemeral.
Whilst Live Art is at the forefront of contemporary arts practice, there is little writing in the critical and popular press, which celebrates its diversity and modernity.
Writing From Live Art will thus will provide an opportunity for new writers, or writers who are new to Live Art, to engage with this rich and vital sector and will provide a structured and supportive environment to write about work, which is at the forefront of contemporary arts practice.

Assessment Criteria and Selection
Live Art UK will select the participants on the scheme. Applicants will be selected by the following criteria:
• The quality of their sample of writing with particular regard to accessibility
• The relevance of their experience and aspirations in relation to the opportunities offered through the critical writing initiative
• Their potential to be an interesting and influential commentator in the field
• Their ability to demonstrate a real commitment to the scheme
It is the intention of Live Art UK to support a range of writers who together form a coherent programme. This will therefore inform the final decision on which writers will be selected and one writer may be prioritised over another to ensure a diversity of approaches to critical writing are represented in the initiative.
In certain circumstances the selection panel may identify further information that it may need to help in the assessment of applications.
