Call for writing on and around Live Art

The Live Art Almanac: a publication of writing on and around Live Art.

The Live Art Almanac is a new initiative that will draw together recent writing about and around Live Art – from reviews to interviews to cultural commentaries.

What articles have you read, what emails did you receive or forward to a friend, what blogs have you visited, what texts crossed your path?  Did they engage you, amuse you, or make you rethink Live Art?  If it caught your eye and had something interesting to say then we want to know about it.

We are seeking recommendations of articles, interviews, blogs, emails and letters on and around Live Art practice and the contemporary cultural landscape in which it sits.  We want to hear about engaging, provocative, and thoughtful writing in circulation which sheds light on Live Art and its discourses.  Live Art addresses a broad range of audiences and we are seeking contributions that reflect these audiences in the range of writing styles and where the writing is placed.

Your recommendation can be from any source between January 2006 to April 2008 that has been published or distributed, or new writing not yet published or distributed.

The Live Art Almanac is a not-for-profit publication, produced by Live Art UK.  It aims to be a good read about and around Live Art for artists, writers, students and others interested in Live Art.

Writing for the Live Art Almanac will be selected by Phillip Stanier, the lead editor and an editorial team made up of members of Live Art UK. The Almanac will reproduce writing in its original published form.

Email your recommendations to emmy@liveartuk.org.

Full details

What is the Live Art Almanac?
The Live Art Almanac is a publication that brings together writing about Live Art and around Live Art that is in circulation.  We envisaged that the content will range from writing about Live Art practices and artists to broader articles about the cultural landscape which impacts on or influences Live Art practices and discourses.

We expect that most of the material included in the Almanac will be from published sources, however, we do not rule out original and unpublished material.  We will consider writing originally published in any form: hard copy or electronic.  We will not prioritise academic writing.  While the Almanac has a predominantly UK focus we will consider writing from outside the UK.  Material will be published in English and translations to English are welcome.  Material should have been published or written between January 2006 to April 2008.

The Almanac aims to reproduce writing in its original published form – by this we mean we will print emails and blogs as we receive them, and photocopy newspaper and magazine articles.  The Almanac will be produced on a print-on-demand basis with low specification production values.  The Live Art Almanac is more about content than style.

How do I make a recommendation or submit material?
The Live Art Almanac seeks writing that directly or indirectly addresses Live Art practice and the contemporary Live Art landscape.

To recommend or submit material email emmy@liveartuk.org.

Ideally, you will send us a copy of your recommendation but if this is not possible email us the author, title, and the location of the writing and we’ll track it down.

How will the content of the Live Art Almanac be selected?
Material for the Almanac will be selected by Phillip Stanier, the lead editor and an editorial team made up of members of Live Art UK.  The selectors will seek to select a range of material that is representative of the most engaging, provocative, thoughtful writing about Live Art and the cultural landscape in which it is set.  It is our intention to include material from a diversity of sources and writers.

Is there a house style?
No, we will reproduce material in the style in which we receive it.

Is there money involved?
We cannot pay writers for their contributions to the Live Art Almanac.  However, we have a very small budget to pay copyright fees to original publishers where applicable.

The Live Art Almanac will be sold through Unbound the online bookstore of the Live Art Development Agency – www.thisisUnbound.co.uk.  However, the Almanac is a not-for-profit initiative and all money raised through sales will go towards the costs of producing the Almanac.  In other words, the Almanac will be sold at cost price.

Who is publishing the Live Art Almanac?
The Live Art Almanac is published by the Live Art Development Agency in partnership with Live Art UK and financially assisted by the University of Leeds.

Who is paying for the Live Art Almanac?
Live Art UK is financially assisted by Arts Council England.  The Live Art Almanac is also financially assisted by the University of Leeds.

Is the Almanc a one-off initiative or an ongoing project?
Material is currently being collated for the first Almanac which will be published in March/April 2008. Live Art UK plans that this will be the first in an ongoing initiative.
